The Challenge

One of the main challenges was the delay in PayPal’s payment gateway webhook response, which could take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. This created a significant lag in confirming payments, causing potential issues with transaction processing. Another issue arose with donations made without requiring users to log in, making it difficult to verify payment requests. Lastly, the system struggled to convert donation receipts from HTML to PDF, leading to server timeouts that halted the build process.

The Solution

To resolve the PayPal delay, an IPN (Instant Payment Notification) service was implemented alongside the webhook, ensuring that payments were processed promptly without delays. For the donation verification issue, a unique key was generated using the user's email, timestamp, and other essential details, allowing the system to verify the payment request without requiring login credentials. To tackle the server timeout during HTML-to-PDF conversion, a dedicated EC2 instance was set up to handle the process smoothly, preventing further disruptions during the build.

Insights

We built the school’s website that works as a centralized platform for students in grades K-12 and adults aged 18-21 to learn in the best educational setting.

The most highlighted feature of the school website is that it facilitates donation campaigns for non-profit projects. These projects are led by the students and are a great extracurricular activity.
