The Challenges and Their Solutions

1. Marine Telemetry Integration & Data Availability

Challenge

Integrating NJORDLINK IoT devices required access to marine telemetry through third-party hardware and cloud APIs. Sensor availability also varied across boats, while the available testing device was sometimes offline or transmitted limited location data, making it difficult to validate complete engine metrics consistently.

Solution

An API-driven integration layer was implemented to retrieve available telemetry while keeping the architecture flexible for additional sensors. Development initially focused on baseline metrics such as RPM, engine hours, and temperature. A live device with engine sensors was then reconnected to validate API responses against actual readings.

2. Real-Time Monitoring & Telemetry Visualization

Challenge

The app needed to handle both live engine monitoring and historical analysis for RPM, engine hours, and water temperature. The challenge was turning continuous telemetry into usable time-series data while presenting multiple readings, device status, and performance trends without making the monitoring experience difficult to navigate.

Solution

Continuous telemetry was structured for time-series storage and surfaced through graph-based dashboard views. Daily, weekly, and monthly filters allow users to review historical trends, peak values, and engine performance. Modular screens also separate device status and synchronization details from the primary engine monitoring experience.

3. Device Onboarding & Verification

Challenge

Connecting a physical IoT device to the correct boat required more than a simple pairing flow. The application needed to identify valid hardware and prevent an unverified Machine ID or Device ID from being associated with the wrong vessel.

Solution

A dedicated device onboarding flow was introduced around the Machine ID and Device ID supplied by the hardware. The application verifies the identifier against the cloud platform before establishing the device-to-boat connection, creating a controlled path for registering and managing connected marine hardware.

4. Phased Product Architecture

Challenge

The product roadmap extended beyond core engine monitoring to include GPS tracking, weather APIs, emergency support, predictive maintenance, and AI-based insights. The initial architecture therefore needed to support the MVP without creating technical constraints that would make later feature expansion costly or disruptive.

Solution

A phased development strategy separated immediate engine monitoring requirements from later capabilities. The architecture was kept flexible enough to accommodate additional telemetry, GPS, weather, emergency services, and future analytics as the product evolved, allowing new functionality to be introduced without restructuring the core application.

5. Subscription & Payment Handling

Challenge

The existing user base introduced subscription and payment complications, including outdated plan expiry dates and issues affecting access control. These legacy conditions had to be addressed without disrupting the updated membership model or creating inconsistencies between user entitlements and their subscription status.

Solution

Legacy subscription expiry dates were updated, and payment-flow issues were investigated to identify access-related inconsistencies. Subscription handling was then aligned with the updated business model, ensuring existing user plans and application access reflected the intended membership structure.
